How to synchronize files between your laptop and office network drive (with ad-hoc control)

If you are a laptop user, you probably want to have all your files updated to the latest version from office network drive (or your desktop/file server) before you get on the road.  And on the other way round, when you make changes on these files, you also want them to be copied back to the network.

Sounds simple.  But if you have a large among of files, you will not want hand-pick the files which needed to be updated or to blindly copy the entire collection every time.  That is what Bamboo File Sync and Backup designed for.

Bamboo will automatically compare the folders on the two locations and analyze the differences.  It will pick the files you've modified and copy them back to your office network drive, instead of copying the entire 8GB "C:\AllActiveClients" folder every time!  And from the other way round, all updates and new stuffs from your colleagues in the office are updated to your Laptop too.

Now, your are ready to be on the road again!

(Advanced) But chances are that by the time you Run sync, you may need to have some ad-hoc detail control over what to sync and what not to sync.  To further control what files to be synchronized, you can further take another step to specify the Sync Operation by selecting "Run with Options.." by either right-clicking the Folder Pair entry in Bamboo Sync Center or;

Bamboo Run with Options

Click the "Run with Options..." tool button at the toolbar with a Folder Pair is selected.

Bamboo Run with Options Tool Button

You will see such a dialog:
Bamboo Run with Options Dialog (Sync Action)

The Sync Operation options are:

■  Sync all changes, both ways

■  Copy L2 changes to L1 only, hold over L1 changes

■  Copy L1 changes to L2 only, hold over L2 changes

■  Overwrite any differences in L1 with L2's copies

■  Overwrite any differences in L2 with L1's copies

For example:  (assume that you have selected your laptop folder as Location 1 and office network drive as Location 2)
  1. After a business trip and back to office, you want to get the latest document updates from the office network drive.  However, since you are working on a number of the documents and they are not finalized, you don't want to sync the changes to network drive yet.  The option "Copy L2 changes to L1 only, hold over L1 changes" is the right choice.  Any updates in the network drive is copied to your laptop, while leaving changes on laptop un-propagated to the network drive.  When you finished your works on your laptop, execute a normal Run with "Sync all changes, both ways" to push your updates to the network drive.

  2. You have made some changes to the documents on your laptop, but you found you have made some mistakes and want to get back the original version from network drive.  You can select the option "Overwrite any differences in L1 with L2's copies".  With this option, Bamboo will not ignore which copy is the latest one and just overwrite any un-matched files from network drive.
The scenarios can go on and on when you get familiar with Bamboo "Run with Options...".  You can be as creative as you can on using such options and usages.
